1974 – The Marchesini story began when Massimo Marchesini, a technician specialized in the construction of automatic machinery, decided to set up his own company, called 2M.
The market immediately welcomed the ingenious solutions proposed for original automation of all operations that had until then been performed manually.
1976 – Following the great creative development applied to industrial processes, of which Marchesini seems to have been one of the main protagonists, the first intermittent-motion cartoner was made. It was an instant success. With the establishment of Generalmac, run by his son Maurizio, the company entered the primary packaging sector, producing the first sachet filling machine for packaging powders and the first tube filling machine which packaged effervescent tablets in rigid tubes.
1979 – in response to the growing demand from the pharmaceutical market, which started calling for increasingly fast packaging lines, Marchesini launched the first continuous-motion cartoner. The result of the creativity of young designer Giuseppe Monti, who had been at Marchesini’s side since the company was set up, the design featured highly original technical solutions, adapted from motorcycle mechanics: oil bath motors, innovative guards enhancing extreme machine reliability and safety. A special company: M80 was created to produce this new series, which proved to be an unprecedented success.
1985-1986 During these two years Marchesini consolidated its presence in the primary packaging sector: in 1984 with the acquisition of Gamma of Carpi, which allowed Marchesini access to the blister packaging sector and the following year which saw it enter the liquid filling sector.
1989 The ‘80s saw the start of serious planning for rational and systematic industrial development. Innovative ideas and acquisitions helped Marchesini set its sights on becoming a single reference point for the supply of complete pharmaceutical packaging lines. In 1990 all of the companies were merged to form one body: Marchesini Group S.p.A.
1995-96 – During these years the Group was joined by Smabo, one of the biggest wrapping machine producers, Packservice which makes case packers, sachet fillers and strip packaging machines and Tonazzi, a pioneer in the tube filling machine sector.
By the mid-‘90s the Marchesini Group was already able to supply cartoners, blister packers, wrapping machines and end of line products: the range of machines was almost complete.
2002 – Expansion continued with the acquisition of Farcon, a leader in the production of deep thermoformers and walleting machines, and CNC, a company specialised in the design and construction of complex cutters and moulds. This year also saw the acquisition of Teamac, which produces machines that package tea in envelopes, diversifying supply to the food sector as well.
2003 – Acquisition of Corima, which produces systems for processing ampoules and syringes. As well as completing the range of machines, this marked the achievement of an important objective: to become the only group in the world able to supply its customers with complete syringe lines, from washing to palletising.
