THE PRESENT AND FUTURE OF ROBOTICS:
ROBOCOMBI - ROBOVISION - GIGACOMBI
Innovative, flexible solutions capable of revolutionising traditional packaging line feeding units. Marchesini Group has been investing resources and perfecting innovative robotised solutions that when incorporated in infeed units are capable of guaranteeing the highest standards of flexibility and reliability throughout the whole packaging process for a wide range of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.
This successful strategy is the result at a careful study of specific market needs.
Today, this kind of technology is becoming more and more vital for the international cosmetics and pharmaceuticals packaging market. As opposed to traditional infeed units, robots do not need to be manufactured for a specific, individual product. Instead, if provided with the appropriate pick up equipment they can be used for a variety of different products with different shapes, weights and sizes. At a practical level, robotised solutions are extremely interesting as they are highly flexible and capable of interacting with the product, process and surrounding environment according to established and programmable instructions. Some of the very important advantages they offer include the fact that they can be used in different processes and sectors, that they can adapt to situations which are not always predictable; that they perform the tasks assigned with speed and precision; that they can repeat operations and drastically reduce size change times.
This is why these robots are such a real investment for companies. In other words, robotics represent the present, but above all, the future of packaging as they offer the highest level of performance that is required within both the cosmetics and pharmaceutics sector.
THE MARCHESINI GROUP AND ROBOTICS
The Marchesini Group invests heavily in new robotic technology and has already for some years now been launching extremely successful solutions thanks to their flexibilitY, innovation and precision.
One of the first solutions to be developed by Marchesini was the Robocombi, a robotized device initially developed to pick up blisters coming from a flighted belt and fed onto a continuously moving cartoning m/c. Thanks to the geometry of its arms, this robot can pick up blisters of various sizes and feed them to a cartoner, without needing, like traditional kinds of infeed units, to accumulate blisters in a magazine, separate them and then feed them individually. Today, the Robocombi can be used in a wide variety of applications, from blisters to strips, boxes to flowpacks, and from squeezable to rigid tubes.
The strong points of this robotised solution, that has been developed entirely at the Marchesini Group, are maximum flexibility with regard to single and multiple item feeding and a drastic reduction in size change times and ‘fine tuning’ operations.
As far as blisters are concerned, thanks to the positive transport system and the Robocombi pick up/transfer device, the product is never left alone and is always kept strictly under control.
If a buffer system is connected to a Robocombi, it also reduces the effects of micro-stops in the machines upstream and downstream of cartoner avoiding interrupting the production process.
Starting from the know-how gained with Robocombi, the Marchesini Group has then also developed Robovision, a 4-axis robot with an incorporated system. Thanks to a vision video-camera and to the software it is equipped with, this robot acquires and manages the image and turns each product to be processed in the right direction. Thanks to this data it can pick up and transfer products, turning them round as required and depositing them in the carton packer buckets.
Designed to pick up objects coming in randomly on a conveyor belt and feed them on to a cartoner with a continuous or intermittent movement, the Robovision can perform up to 100 pick ups a minute (a variable value that depends on the type of product to be processed). Thanks to the bridge structure that distinguishes it, the device can be served by both a conveyor belt positioned parallel to it, or a conveyor belt positioned 90°. In addition, if the product is not picked up, it is rejected and recycled by the device at the end of the conveyor belt. This product is distinguished by its maximum layout flexibility and high precision movements and software which, like the entire project, has been completely developed by the Marchesini Group. Thanks to these features and its extreme adaptability, Robovision can be used in a wide variety of applications, in both the pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors.
The Marchesini Group’s latest robotised end-of-line solution is the Gigacombi, a new robot that guarantees both high performance and great flexibility in the palletiser zone. Once cases have been packed and closed, they are picked up by the Gigacombi, deposited, turned in the correct way and stacked on to a pallet, according to a system memorised on the machine’s PC. This robot is able to handle cases of various weights and sizes and guarantees extremely quicke size changes.
