Cartons for syringes in cardboard trays: speed and flexibility thanks to robotic infeed systems

How to package syringes in cardboard trays at high production speeds? Backed by many years of experience, gained in over forty years of business in the carton packaging industry, the Marchesini Group has come up with a unique and custom-built solution for a major Chinese pharma company: the horizontal continuous-motion cartoner MA352, with especially designed magazine units for high speeds and equipped with two robotic infeed systems by Marchesini (Robocombi).
The package – the tray is made of cardboard (mono-material): this type of package is in great demand on the market because it complies with sustainable criteria that are becoming more and more important in the field of pharmaceutical packaging too. Being a delicate product, Marchesini has devised a cardboard tray with an internal structure that is capable of holding the syringe firmly in place throughout the entire packaging process.
The machine and its strong points – What are the strong points of this fast, compact, reliable and flexible robotic packaging machine? Let’s take a look at the details. 1) Speed – First and foremost, Marchesini has combined the horizontal continuous-motion cartoning machine MA352 with magazine units (from 2 to 8) made to reach production rates of up to 400 syringes per minute: such speeds are rather difficult to reach when packaging this type of product. 2) Robotic infeed systems – the use of robotics is fundamental and the Marchesini Group has indeed always dedicated major resources and energy to this topic: the cartoner is in fact equipped with two Robocombi’s (3-axes robot with sucker pick-up head), which are both flexible and reliable. The first Robocombi  picks up the trays sent from the magazines, erects them and places them directly in the bucket chain of the cartoner with continuous motion; a second Robocombi picks up the syringes, turns them by 90 degrees to position them horizontally inside the formed trays. Both robots are controlled by just one PC, which makes the operators’ tasks easy to manage: so, just one robotic system devised to handle syringes in trays. From here, the trays holding the syringes can be packaged either individually or grouped in layers, based on the customer’s specific requirements. 3) Another important aspect is the machine’s layout, which offers the same features and advantages as all of Marchesini’s cartoning machines: model MA352 is indeed compact and built entirely with balcony design, making it totally accessible and visible, with incredibly short size change-over times and minimal maintenance.
The tray erection and syringe insertion operations are carried out by the cartoning machine, so there is no need to purchase another machine to be installed before the cartoner: Marchesini thus saves you space and costs with this product. This solution satisfies the specific productive and packaging requirements of such delicate products as are syringes and is ready to enjoy great success on the worldwide marketplace in view of its excellent level of reliability, flexibility and speed.
