Mechatronics

What’s it all about?

Mechatronics is a branch of engineering which is a product of the integration of three subfields: mechanics, electronics and computer science. The purpose is to automate production systems in order to simplify and, in some cases, replace manual labour. Mechatronics is essential in all market sectors that require high-quality, precision mechanical processing, process control and high technological standards. Mechatronics is used in the field of robotics, automatic machines (like those for assembly or packaging), and the automobile and biomedical sectors.

The professionals required must be skilled in the modelling, simulation and prototyping of control systems, for the most part Motion Control systems. Those working in this field are therefore largely responsible for the design and production of automatic control systems, including development software and electronic control units.

What kind of knowledge is required to work in this area?

In the mechatronics sector, the planning & design, construction, management and maintenance of mechanical systems with computer-controlled electronic components - mainly automated industrial machines and solutions - are of fundamental importance. The level of expertise varies depending on the specific profession; usually, however, all those working in mechatronics have excellent problem-solving abilities and a propensity for teamwork. Specific educational qualifications are often required, as are excellent organisational and analytical skills.

Who works in this sector?
  • Mechatronics technician - Qualifying high school diploma as mechanical, mechatronic or industrial technician
  • Mechatronic engineer - Degree in mechatronic engineering
  • Mechanical designer - Degree in mechanical, industrial or automation engineering
