AVIS CARPI ONLUS

The Carpi municipal AVIS branch (Italian blood donors association) was founded in 1953 to bring together those who are prepared to give blood anonymously without any form of remuneration. AVIS is a non-profit, apolitical, non-denominational association that rejects all forms of discrimination based on gender, race, language, nationality, creed or political ideology. The unchanging aims of the association are: to meet the growing demand for blood, to unite donors, ready and tested in terms of blood type and health, to combat the trade of human blood, to donate blood free of charge to whoever needs it, without any form of discrimination. Despite the reduction of donors registered in the past decade, Italy is still able to meet internal demands for blood thanks to a compensation scheme between the Regions.

Thanks to the “Italian blood system”, which is based entirely on voluntary and non-remunerated donation, a total of 637 transfusions were carried out in 2017 for surgical procedures or treatment of illnesses such as thalassemia.
